Pet Obesity During The Holidays

We have rounded the corner from Thanksgiving and are headed towards Christmas.  During this span, the average American gains 5 pounds.  It is OK… we will start out the new year with a commitment to lose the added weight.

Will you make that commitment for your pet?  Pet Obesity is a growing problem.

Fat Dog, Pet Obesity

A 2005 study found that 60 percent of pets in the U.S. were overweight.  Most owners will tell you that their pets are the perfect size.  Would they say that if they new that they were killing there pet?

How can you help your pet lose weight?  The answer is simple… Diet and Exercise.

Feed your pet good healthy pet food, staying away from human junk food and sweets.  Control your pets portions.  Do not over feed your pet.  For aid in portion control, try an automatic pet feeder.  It is the best way to give your pets perfectly portioned meals three times per day.

Exercise with your dog.  Take your dog for walks or runs everyday.  If you are a cat owner, invest in some cat toys.  Take some time out of each day to play with your cat.  With the right training, you can even walk your cat on a leash.

Make the commitment this holiday season to help your pet lose weight.  Take the steps necessary to ensure the good health of your furry friend.

The Top Five Dog Breeds

In October, we asked the question, “What is your favorite dog breed?”  We recieved some really good feedback.  Below are some of the more convincing comments from our readers.

Pugs are BY FAR the cutest and most wonderful pets EVER! They LOVE people, and LOVE to snuggle! Plus, how can you refuse that cute little snout and curly tail? Please, do yourself a favor…buy a pug!  -Marge Thomas

Of course everyone is partial to the dog breed that they have been around the most. My vote, due to my experiences, goes to the Doberman Pinscher. Any positive adjective that can be used to describe a dog breed can be attributed to the Doberman. My dog, Vince, is incredible intelligent and great with people. Contrary to the negative stereotype against the breed, I have never had a bad experience.  -Adam Huskerson

No question about it, the English Setter. If you are an outdoor person …. and by outdoor person I mean anyone who likes to hunt, hike, run/walk at the park, bike ride, spend time in the backyard with kids, etc. … then this is the perfect breed. Without question, they are friendly and people-oriented. And, the English Setter is great for families. Not many dog breeds can live up to this standard.  -Elliot

Woohoo!! You’re dang right about the goldens! You can’t go wrong with those guys. We have a 9-month-old golden named Guthrie and he’s awesome! Lots of fun, extremely loveable, very intelligent and athletic, playful when desired but cuddly when you need him to be. He gets along great with our other pup as well as other dogs. Very friendly and good-lookin’! We’d seriously recommend the golden retriever!  -Libby & Gerardo

I love my pit bull. Contrary to all the news media he is a fantastic animal. He has a very sweet and loving personality. Couldn’t ask for a better dog.  Mine is the BEST!  -Sara

Remote Dog Training

There are many ways to use a remote training collar.  The most common method is to use the collar to encourage rapid and reliable response to commands the dog has already learned.  This method is commonly used for obedience and dog trick training.

There are various remote training collars that employ different technologies to train your dog.  A remote training device that is gaining popularity with dog trainers is the Spray Commander Remote Training Collar.

Spray Train

The Spray Commander electronic spray collar uses a remote control device and the spray dog training collar to re-direct the attention of a distracted or misbehaving dog. Its unique formula works on four of your pet’s five senses; he hears it, feels it, sees it and smells it.

The remote control has 3 settings, which allows you to train your pet through reward - not punishment. The #1 button releases a tone to encourage your pet to repeat the desired behavior.  To disrupt an unwanted behavior, press either the #2 button on the remote, which releases a short spray (.05 sec.) of citronella, or the #3 button for a longer spray (1.5 sec.) in the direction of the collar worn by your pet.

With the Spray Commander, training time is greatly reduced.  It is a highly effective human training device.

What is your experience with remote dog training?  What is your preferred method of dog training?  Tell us your story…
